Group sales of 217 million euros – More than 100 per cent increase compared with 2001 – Influx of approx. 2 billion euros in purchasing power to capital and surrounding region – Over 60 per cent of exhibitors came from abroad – Major successes on Asian market
– With sales totalling some 217 million euros, last year was the most successful ever for the Messe Berlin group of companies. This represents a ten-fold increase in sales by Messe Berlin over the past ten years. Since 2001 (106.4 mi. euros) sales have risen by 104 per cent. Compared with 2009 (157.5 mi. euros) the increase in sales has amounted to 37.7 per cent. Messe Berlin’s events have provided the capital and the surrounding region with an influx of some two billion euros as a result of expenditure by out-of-town visitors to trade shows and conventions.
”With well above average growth in 2010 in its trade fair business and the marketing of international conventions Berlin, as an acknowledged venue for such events, has again achieved very encouraging progress”, reports the Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin, Raimund Hosch. “The establishment, in collaboration with ZukunftsAgentur Brandenburg (ZAB), of Messeimmobilien Selchow GmbH has provided the basis for further growth in the capital and surrounding region. The decision to extend the exhibition grounds at the Funkturm (Radio Tower) also offers new commercial prospects.
With its wide-ranging portfolio of activities comprising leading international trade shows, success overseas in Southeast Asia, and a flourishing convention business, Messe Berlin is already in a strong and stable market position. Raimund Hosch: “Even without InnoTrans and ILA, which are not scheduled to take place in 2011, we remain positive about the prospects for the coming year.”
The 62 trade shows and exhibitions which took place in Berlin – including 23 that were organized in-house by Messe Berlin – attracted a total attendance of some two million people (2009: 1.6 million), who included a large number of international specialist buyers. In 2010 the presence of foreign exhibitors at the capital’s trade show venue was once again above the average for Germany as a whole: over 60 per cent of the more than 24,000 exhibiting companies at Messe Berlin’s own events came from abroad.
Messe Berlin stages six leading international events in the capital, the International Green Week Berlin, ITB, IFA, FRUIT LOGISTICA, InnoTrans and ILA, serving various specialist areas.
ITB Asia (720 exhibitors) and Asia Fruit Logistica (304 exhibitors) are two recently established and rapidly expanding international trade shows which the company organizes in Southeast Asia.
In 2011 the programme in Berlin will be augmented by two new events: VELOBerlin is a bicycle exhibition taking place for the first time in the capital from 25 to 27 March 27, and from 22 to 24 June Public Transport / Interiors, will provide an international marketing platform for all suppliers and buyers of furnishings and fittings for local and regional public transport.
A strong position in the convention sector too
The Congress Division of Messe Berlin achieved very good business results in 2010. The International Congress Center Berlin (ICC Berlin), Palais am Funkturm and the exhibition halls hosted a total of 530 meetings and entertainment events with an overall attendance of some 240,000. An above-average proportion of out-of-town visitors were registered among the more than 210,000 conference attendees, with approximately 71 per cent (150.000 meetings participants) coming from outside Berlin. Many of the large conferences were accompanied by industry displays, occupying an overall area of 145,000 square metres on the Exhibition Grounds.
