Messe Berlin and the coronavirus outbreak

Since the beginning of the year we have been monitoring and assessing events regarding the spread of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) on a daily basis. We are in close contact with the relevant public health authorities. The following applies to all events on all exhibition grounds belonging to Messe Berlin: we are following the recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute and the relevant authorities at federal and state level and will implement corresponding instructions. Only they possess the necessary information and specialist knowledge in order to draw the right conclusions.

The Senate Chancellery of Berlin has information on the spread of the coronavirus in Berlin as well as the measures being taken by the Berlin Senate on a website specifically set up for this purpose (https://www.berlin.de/corona/).

Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, trade fairs, congresses and guest events can only take place on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds subject to the conditions of the latest COVID-19 infection control directive and in close coordination with the relevant public health authorities. The directive stipulates a step-by-step easing of the limits on attendance numbers. Accordingly, the maximum number of persons allowed to be at an event at any one time will be 300 throughout July, 500 in August, and 750 in September. From 1 October to 24 October attendances may not exceed 1,000 at any one time.

Hygiene and safety measures must also be put in place. In coordination with the relevant public health authority Messe Berlin has developed a comprehensive concept to take the best possible steps to ensure the safety of all participants.

Messe Berlin will be happy to advise guest event organisers. Please contact our colleagues coordinating your event.

The safety and health of our exhibitors, partners and visitors have the utmost priority for us. Therefore, in coordination with the relevant public health authorities Messe Berlin has developed a comprehensive safety and hygiene concept. The concept is based on the following principles: hygiene, physical distancing and contact tracing. Measures include separate entrances and exits, wide aisles and limited seating in front of stages in order to ensure physical distancing of 1.5 metres. In addition to bathrooms, door handles and hand rails being regularly cleaned/disinfected to prevent smear infection, wearing a face mask at events is also advised. Furthermore, subject to data protection laws, the contact data will be collected of those persons entering and leaving the exhibition grounds. This data will be made available upon request to the relevant public health authority in order to trace the contacts of COVID-19 infected persons.

Every event is assessed individually according to this safety and hygiene concept and measures are coordinated correspondingly. Due to the unpredictability of developments regarding the coronavirus pandemic, these measures are subject to constant review and amended as required.

Details of measures for individual events can be found on the respective websites. If you have any queries please contact our colleagues coordinating your event. Contact information is available on the websites of the events.

Following a decision by the Berlin Senate a provisional coronavirus treatment centre has been set up in Hall 26 on the grounds of Messe Berlin. This backup facility is intended to alleviate the pressure on Berlin hospitals treating COVID-19 patients. The treatment centre is completely partitioned off from the remainder of the exhibition grounds and is expressly planned as a temporary facility. It is to remain open no longer than 31 December 2020.

Messe Berlin supported the Senate’s efforts to set up the treatment centre in order to better prepare the city for the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Equipping the Coronavirus Treatment Centre (CBZ) is being supervised and coordinated by the Senate Department for Health, Nursing and Equality. It is operated by the municipality’s Vivantes Hospital Group.
